I just saw a computer coloured version of my favourite Xmas movie "Miracle On 34th Street" (1947) and I was not impressed. I prefer to see movies as they were originally filmed but I'm not fanatical about it. Certain films simply wouldn't work in colour. Can you imagine Psycho in colour? MO34S doesn't fall into that category so I wouldn't object to its colourization if the result was even half as good as if it was originally filmed in colour, but it isn't. You just can't recover that kind of information from a B&W print. The result looked like a sepia-toned B&W print with a few obvious dashes of colour: blue sky, green grass, pink flesh tones, red Santa suit. Blah, Humbug... Merry Xmas

I read a few days ago that the company that does this is considering coloring "Casablanca"! They realize that the critics would burn them in effigy if they did this, so they are reluctant. However, networks are reluctant to show B&W films. The company believes that if a network were to show a color version of "Casablanca" in prime-time it would probably be both the best and most-watched film on TV. -- Barry Margolin ARPA: barmar@MIT-Multics UUCP: ..!genrad!mit-eddie!barmar
