I would like to pick a nit here. How do you know that "the great
majority of Americans think that the stereotypes you are laughing at are
true"? Or the general public is ignorant? Was a poll taken, or is this
just a gut feeling?

This reflects one of my biggest pet peeves: The cavalier attitude that
people in general are basically stupid and therefore do not/cannot
understand anything beyond pap. (phtooui!)

Judging by the jokes I've heard from Russians concerning their
own situation, I'd bet that most Soviet citizens would also find the
commercials funny. If the commercials were shown on Soviet TV, I'd bet
that the only people not laughing would be those who were members of the
ruling elite. (and those who had members of the ruling elite standing
right behind them :-))

I've been to the Soviet Union, and I would say that there is a
considerable bit of truth in those commercials. Since you've elevated
yourself to one of the enlightened few of the general public who are
not ignorant of conditions in the USSR, perhaps you could share with
us the source of your enlightenment?
