[net.tv] FALSE Meta-humour

For a good example of sloppy, obvious, false meta-humour, tune in to
CBN sometime and watch any old episode of the George Burns show. In
defence of the writers of that show, it is quite apparent that they
MEANT to be as obvious as possible with the meta-comments. And to that
end they succeeded. They practically hit you over the head with it.

Well, that is a different case. It wasn't supposed to be meta-humor.
Burns is actually talking to the audience. On purpose. Remember, there
was also a live studio audience at the time. Also the show is a bit
different because he was playing himself, for the most part.

Some of the later episodes of Burn & Allen (which included their son
Ronnie Burns), showed George talking to the audience from his upstairs
study. The real meta-humor came when George would switch the TV to his
own show to find out what Gracie was up to.
