[net.tv] Computers on TV

ken@ihuxq.UUCP (ken perlow) (01/07/84)

Is anyone else upset about the proliferation of computerized-
police-state tv shows? The consistent message in "Whiz Kids",
"Automan", "Knight Rider" and (by all reviews) "Blue Thunder"
is that the computer = the law = your friend. This Hollywood
Trinity-for-our-times offends me as a computer scientist the way
"Mr. T" would were I Black. Yessiree, it's 1984, right on schedule.

I read somewhere (possibly someplace obvious like TV Guide) that it is
network policy to put limits on computers in TV shows. The example cited was
for Star Trek, I think, but it could easily translate to Knight Rider: The
computer must never solve the problem. It can provide information and analysis,
but must not give the human the solution. Presumably this is to prevent
widespread panic and other potential problems. Also, now, the Whiz Kids are
not allowed (again, by network policy) to break into any computer but the
Bad Guys'. You won't see them say so in the script; if you are VERY observant,
you will see that they do not break into police/FBI/corporate computers any
more (unless the corporation is the bad guy).

What gets me is how much the Macintosh is seen in different programs. David
and Maddie's office on MOONLIGHTING is literally littered with them.

Of course, my favorite Computer on TV is watching Dr. Auchlander get on the
Pirate's Bulletin Board on the last episode of St. Elsewhere...
