It would be very nice if one editor were obviously best and everyone agreed on
it. Since that is impossible, it would be nice if there were an editor which
was sufficiently extensible to give people what they want (especially since on
TOPS-20 there is a major saving by everyone running the same editor). If an
editor is really extensible, then it should be able to give people what they
want, no matter how brain-damaged you think it is. Thus it is a real
deficiency that EMACS cannot truncate lines at the right margin, since there
are a lot of people in the world that seem to like it. This is impossible in
EMACS as it is now, so if anyone writes it from scratch again, it's something
to think about...

In fact there is a TECO flag that controls whether or not lines
are truncated. It is always set to not truncate in ^R mode
(which is what EMACS is always in) but it probably wouldn't be
too hard to fix this, if anybody cared enough to do it.
