The alternative keyboard design that I know of is the Dvorak keyboard (after
the guy that designed it, not the layout). It is certainly faster to type on,
a figure of 3 times as fast has been claimed; I couldn't say. I wrote a
simulator for TOPS-20 that allows you to use Dvorak, and learned to use it
enough to see that it's a win if you really have it in the terminal, but not if
you have to invoke a kluge. Someday I'll get my keyboard ROMs reprogrammed.
It is probably considered to be "crackpot-ish" by most of the world, but that
doesn't make it bad...
