Good evaluation of a complex situation. I'd caution all of you not to draw any sweeping conclusions about digital re- cording until you've heard direct digital playback from a digital master tape or from a digital Compact Disc system. And even in the latter case, not all the first software which will be available will be from a digital master tape. It's been my experience that in Compact Disc playback it is fairly easy to tell the analog-mastered recordings from the digitally mastered ones. Take a look at the December 1982 issue of Stereo Review magazine for more of my opinions on the CD system. By the way, the Compact disc can provide a digital data rate of more than 4 mega- bits per second for more than an hour; just wait until it is applied to mass storage and distribution of digital data. from David Ranada, Technical Editor, Stereo Review Magazine (just passing through...)
