If you demag. a machine that has not been done in a long time you will probably not notice much difference in your older tapes. They very likely have a deteriorated frequency response and noise level due to partial erasure of the tape from the magnetic fields. Your new tapes will be protected against this problem if you demag. the machine regularly. You should notice an improvement in recently recorded tapes if they have not been used too many times in the magnetized machine. New tapes will maintain their frequency characteristics longer and sound better, especially on the high end of the audio band. The machine will also be able to reproduce these frequencies better without all the stray magnetic fields. Dave Burris ihlpb!burris BTL - Naperville

I never trust statistics about "what the human ear can hear". I found out very young that there is no standard that works. I figure they must be testing 40 year old males or some such. When I was a child, all my friends could hear the TV whine, something most adults couldn't hear. As I've grown older, many of these same people have lost the ability, but I can still hear it. I don't know how many more years that will last, although I've never found anyone over 53 who could still hear it. Now, those people out there who believe that certain levels of accuracy/ reproduction/distortion are pointless to measure shouldn't let themselves be fooled by official statistics of what humans can and can't hear. If YOU can't hear it, don't spend the money. But those of us with more sensitive ears ought to be left alone to our mania. Not afraid to sign my name, Just afraid to listen to the key-clicks Ken Arnold P.S. This is not to claim that all people who run after the latest and "greatest" audio reproduction are just poor, misunderstood, sensitive souls. But if it weren't for the egoists, there wouldn't be a big enough market for the manufacturers.s
