[net.audio] demagnetizing servo decks

jim (11/10/82)

For those of you with servo (solenoid actuated play, rec, etc.) decks
who were wondering about the safety of using the demagnetizers built into
the cassette shell:

I talked to a field service engineer from Technics yesterday since
I own a RSM-45 servo deck. He said that since there is no way to engage
the head without the deck power on, turn the output level down all the
way, insert demag cassette, and hit play. This will *peg* the fluorescent
meters, but won't harm either the meter or head pre-amp circuits. He also
said that due to the fact that (Panasonic, at least) has been using an
ac-bias head circuit and a head made out of a superior metal that does
not absorb magnetism, it REALLY isn't necessary, especially every 10-30
hours. But he also said if demagnetizing your heads makes you feel good,
"do it!"
