[net.audio] Tone-arm dropping

shauns@sri-unix (11/30/82)

Dropping a tonearm onto a record produces a large signal pulse as the
stylus cantilever is deflected. If the volume is not turned down this
pulse will get through to the speakers and will cause a large, potentially
damaging excursion of the speaker cone(s), particularly the woofer.

This is why I look for turntables with automatic muting during arm cycling.
Then you don't have to worry about the big thump.
