[net.audio] Audio tape, head demag. and bias adjustment...

dag (01/06/83)

There has been much said in this newsgroup about adjusting the
bias and equalization on tape decks... For those of us who don't
use cassette for music archiving, is there anything that we should
worry about in this? My deck (An old Teac A-4010) has equalization
and bias switches, but no visible "fine tune" controls.

I also have noted a great deal of talk about "new" machines not needing
much demagnitising - Does anyone know if the TEAC A-4010 is of that ilk?

I don't recommend using random organic solvents for cleaning the pinch
roller. TEAC makes a very good rubber conditioner/cleaner which is not
too expensive, lasts a long time, and has managed to restore some life
to some pinch rollers that had started to harden. Check with your audio
shop. ( Don't use plastic-stick cotton swabs with this stuff - they
disolve... )

Finally, I have just purchased a case of 100 2400ft reels of used tape
from a shop in Ohio. I paid seventy cents each, plus shipping. This
shipment had about 20% culls (Tape that was not much good), but the
rest were as good as Radio Shack's middle of the line, and a few were
TDK in good shape. If anyone out there is interested in where and
how I got this deal, send mail directly to me. If there is enough
demand, I'll post the data to the newsgroup.
