The Belle/Blitz sacrifice mentioned in an earlier message was made in the following position with Black (Belle) to move: BR ** BB ** -- BK -- BR BP BP BP BP BQ -- BP -- -- ** -- ** -- ** BP ** ** -- BB -- ** -- ** -- -- ** WB BN BN ** -- ** ** -- WN -- ** -- ** -- WP WP WP WP -- WP WP WP WR -- WB WQ ** WR WK -- Just out of curiousity, I handed this position to my faithful Prestige and put it in "infinite" search mode where it just keeps searching deeper and deeper to see how long it would take to find the solution. Presumably Belle found it in a reasonable amount of time, say below 5 minutes, because it was playing under tournament time controls. Note that Prestige is much, a full set 5. the disks are available within XEROX and will soon be available within DEC 6. Echelon is distributing the disks in a variety of formats (8", Kaypro, Osborne) [all formats are uninstalled at this time] and Echelon includes hardcopy of the installation manual and user's perspective 7. It runs on a tiny 4-mhz 6502. Still, the Spracklens have been able to come up with a nice little program that can play good chess. It took Prestige 57 minutes to find Belle's move: Rxh2! This was a 6-ply search and Prestige felt it was 2.67 pawns ahead after Rxh2. The principal variation is: Rxh2, Nxe4, Qh4, Ng3, Qxg3, Bd5. Stuart
