[net.audio] digital ramblings

Not all CD players are created equal. Some of them throw away
the low-order two bits of each sample, some keep them.

Some of the several digital compact disc (DCD) players have a 14-bit D/A,
but it`s hard to discern from their literature which ones. The Sony CDP-101
has 16 bits.

One of the latest audio mags has a discussion of "CDP sound", stating that
it will be different from player to player. Sounds reasonable, as certainly
the linear circuits will differ, although there are no cartridge or arm
resonances, etc., to worry about. In fact, some differences might be
attributable to things as far up in the chain as the photodetector, an
analogue element.

My CDP-101 sounds very good; its dynamic range clearly exceeds that of the
room I listen to it in. I`m waiting for some opera discs to be released,
though; nothing serious [vocally] is available in Japan yet.
