I purchased the Telarc Omni-Disc and was quite pleased with the
information and capabilities it provided, but what was a real eye-opener
was the quality of the records. The dynamic range, separation, noise floor,
distortion, etc were all amazingly better than any of the DG, Philips, Angel,
and even Denon discs that I have. I immediately coveted all the other Telarc
discs, and was lucky to pick up the 'Marche Slav and Other Russian Favorites'
disc on sale for $12. Phenomenal! Unfortunately the every day low low price
on Telarc is $16!
The Omni-Disc showed my Grace 707 with F9L to track well on the
Thorens TD160BC Mk II, but I don't have the proper specs on overhang. I
started to do the calculations, but I now think that I'll call Sumiko (the
distributor) and might buy the Cart-align system. For those of you with
Omni-Disc the Grace can track about 38 seconds of the tone test and starts
to mistrack on the 3rd repetition of the 1812 cannon shots.
I've started searching the record store for labels comparable to
Telarc and have found a few, but haven't purchased any. How about some
recommendations and comparison of cartridge/tonearm tracking via Omni-Disc?
Anyone getting these discs for less than $16?

Regarding discounts on Telarc ... I too would love to hear of them,
but it seems unlikely to get anything serious. $15.89 for a $16.00
record does NOT represent a serious discount.
Once again I repeat my comments about the DCD ... It will be a LONG
time before even 85% of the DCD recordings (I predict) will be up to the
quality of Side 4 of the OmniDisk in terms of quality of miking and
mixing. This depresses me, since those DCDs will START at $15.
As an aside, I read (in Stereo Review, I think) that there is a DCD
plant being built by a non-major record company ... and that they will
be doing DCDs for a lot of minor labels. Who know, we may see SOME
variety in the format, and not just more recordings of fat tenors and
``Also Sprach Zarathustra''. Still, they will be hard pressed to cover
even the variety of my modest record collection. I'll hang onto my
turntable for a few years. Probably will by a DCD player next winter
though.
