[net.audio] Binaural Microphone Wanted

logo (04/28/83)

I am looking for a very good buy on a used Sennheiser MKE 2002 Triaxial Stereo
Microphone. I am interested in paying up to about $100 for the microphone
(microphones?), power supply/preamp, and perhaps the dummy head and case.
If you wish to sell one, know someone who does, or know someone who would be
good to ask, please let me know. If you know of another binaural microphone
I would like to know about it, especially if you know where I can buy it.

Binaural recording involves putting (omnidirectional?) microphones near
the ear drum so that the shape of the ear determines what sounds are
picked up and with what delays and amplitudes. When listened with open
air headphones binaural recording provides a very distinct spatial
image. Things sound like they are up to 360 degrees around you, and
the sense of their distance is quite marked. Binaural recordings don't
sound like much on speakers.

The MKE 2002 looks about like a pair of airline headphones, and has two
little nubbs which stick farther into your ear. It also has a box on
the cord which contains a battery and preamp. A plastic (or something)
dummy head is optionally available in case you don't wish to wear the
microphones on your own head.

Thanks,

  David Reisner
