[net.audio] CDs in cars

michaelk (05/11/83)

Yesterday, while looking at some SONY cassette decks at a local
stereo store (GAS) the salesman mentioned that SONY was coming out
this fall (Aug/Sept) with new high-end cassette decks, with
"laser" heads, but were to be expensive -- 600-700 dollars. I think
I might translate this to mean CDs (or else, something strange).
I agree that CDs in an average car is silly for audiophile level
activities, but is very useful for practical reasons already mentioned on
the net (as well as for neat-o toy reasons--one of my favorites).
The noise level in a quiet car is something like 60-70 DBA as I
recall from Consumer Reports testing. Add to that, a CD's 90 db dynamic
range, and you get a level of 160 DBA. Assuming you could produce that level,
I don't think one could listen to it (for long).
For those who answered my appeal for info on car audio equipment
for my '83 Honda Accord Sedan and asked me to respond with what I finally
decided to get -- I'm still looking, although I'm getting close. It
took a year to pick out the car, it looks like about 2 months for the radio/...
There's still time for more great ideas to be sent (hint).
