[net.audio] Nakamichi preamps? Whoa!

shauns@tekcad.UUCP (07/13/83)

Before you go out looking for Nakamichi preamps, amps, etc. be advised that
they got into, and out of that business around 1978-1980.
Their stuff was good but atrociously expensive as far as mid-line hi-fi goes,
and conseqently they were priced out of the market.
I know- I have their 430 tuner. Compared to today's $200 models, it looks sick
spec-wise but is built like a brick-a $500 (in 1979!) brick. It still is
better than any commercial FM station except perhaps WFMT.

For an extremely intelligently designed preamp, the APT Holman preamp and the
new preamp II are something to consider-the audio cowboys even LIKE the
Holman preamp though it only costs $500-$600.

His power amplifier is also as trouble-free and as well-designed; pricyer(sp)
than the Haflers, but more tolerant of abuse.

Why doesn't anybody on this net mention APT?
Is Perraux the new Holy Grail?
And will Infinity EVER sell a pair of their Reference Standard speakers?
(not to me, furr sure)
