I resisted putting in my recommendation for the APT-HOLMAN preamp and the APT 1 power amps because people always recommend what they bought (any surprise here???). I bought the APT preamp and 3 APT power amps (biamped situation). The prime reason for the purchase was the quality and excellence of circuit design balanced with useable control features. No frills, bells and whistles or gee-gaws; just superb performance and realiability. Don't underestimate realiability if you truley are going to use ALL your watts into a variety of complex loads. The fact that the "underground Golden-Eared Audio Cowboys" and their quasi- regular publications liked the APT equipment and ranked it right up there with gold plated, epoxy encapsulated, space age, registered, limited edition, hand signed, exotica actually made me think twice about buying APT. Since when did these reviewers ever recommend anything that the average person would ever see, let alone afford? It also seems that the majority of people on this net seem to prefer the highest watt/dollar index when making choices. (Do you ever look at dynamic headroom in addition to the published RMS watts??) One may make a good case for all good amps sounding similiar,ie..good. Most have no dicernable sound of there own that cannot be traced to loading or mis-matching of impedances at one end of the chain or the other, or a measurable spec in the amp itself, assuming the transducers were not changed; therefore the more watts or the control features the better.....Right??? I think if that were the case, Detroit would be winning hands down over the Japanese and the Germans! Yes, I would recommend APT; but then I am biased, I bought it. It was the best all around performance and design for the dollar. Louis Pengue uucp: {ucbvax,decvax,chico,pur-ee,cbosg,ihnss}!teklabs!tekcad!louisp CSnet: louisp@tek ARPAnet:louisp.tek@rand-relay
