[net.audio] Speaker selection

jacoby@kpno.UUCP (07/15/83)

I own a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls and have discovered an
advantage not usually stated in the literature. In addition
to their high efficiency and good bass response, they are
extremely heavy. Because of this feature, the burglars were
unable to walk off with them when they took the rest of
my system.

Here's how I selected my new speakers:

	1) I pre-select among the brands that I think (from reviews and
friends advice) will sound better than mine.

	2) When I have my mind (and wallet) set on one or two eligible
brands, I bring a few of my finest records to the store and
	   carefully listen to the candidates.

	3) If I am pleased but not quite certain, I arrange for a "showdown"
between my system and theirs. I bring my turntable, preamp, amp
and speakers to the store and do a straight A/B. Then, I plug my
speakers into their system, and the candidate speakers into mine,
and do the A/B test again.

This is how I selected my KEF 105.2 over Spendor BC III's.
My next test will be against IMF References Mk VII.

I have done this kind of testing to select other equipment as well,
and it works fine, even for cartridges. The other thing you find out
is that only serious and worthwhile dealers will let you do this.

I am in the market for a new pair of speakers. I am considering:

1) JBL 4312 Studio monitors
2) Klipsh Heresy
4) Boston A400

I would appreciate reviews or comparisons of these speakers from anyone
who owns or has owned a pair.
