I highly recommend the Harmon-Kardon CD401 cassette deck. It is an
excellent deck for the price and will take metal tapes. The metal
tapes are quieter and have a higher saturation point, thus a wider
dynamic range. The wider dynamic range is seldom needed for
recording albums for play in the car. For live recording where there
is a large dynamic range, I have found metal tapes to be the best.
Actually, the Maxell XL-S tapes have a 2-3db. boost in the high
frequencies that you may notice when recording with a machine which
has a flat frequency response.
