Got back from vacation a while ago and just caught up on net.audio.
About the capacitive loading of MM cartridges. A long time ago, I fiddled
with the switch on my preamp (what 100-450pF?) and could hear no difference.
I also remember borrowing a wave generator from the lab. My speakers
don't put out beyond about 13KHz (arf). My Koss Pro/600aa's went to maybe
15KHz. This was a long time ago. I'm sure I can hear a little beyond that,
crt flyback noise bothers me a lot (my tv is really bad) and I sometimes
notice ultrasonic alarms in stores. Then I read Hirsch's stuff about it,
seems all you do is create a bump or dip out there beyond 15KHz somewhere.
I gotta get me some new speakers!
Regarding equalizers, I have been considering one for some time. Lately I have
taken to using my bass & treble controls (which are fairly subtle) to adjust
for what I consider to be lousy mixing. For example, Santana's "Festival" has
mega-bass and I have to turn it down, while on Return to Forever's "Where Have
I Known You Before" I can barely tell that Stanley Clarke is playing.
I would think that an equalizer would provide more flexibility for this kind
of fiddling. Does anybody out there routinely twiddle their equalizer for
certain records, and if so, what features are desirable?
I also need: CD player, FM tuner, dbx for the cassette deck (or a new deck)...
