Does anyone know a reliable way of telling if your stylus is worn without (a) waiting until your records have been damaged, or (b) getting hold of a microscope?

Many good audio places have a stylus microscope (the Wild-Heerbrug seems to be popular) and will examine your stylus, usually free. You should take your stylus in at least once a year, or 6 months if heavily used. Make sure the guy knows what he's doing and if possible ask to see it yourself (some places will take a picture of it, for a small fee). Don't take chances with minor wear if clearly visible, especially if chipped. The extra cost of replacing the stylus more often would be outweighed by record damage with a worn stylus.
