[net.audio] Buying a casette deck

I've recently sold my Yamaha TC-520 casette deck (for reasons
that have nothing to do with its performance, etc.) and I now
find myself with about $200-$250 to spend on a new deck. A
friend of mine who used to sell audio gear has suggested
that I not believe the stereo magazine's suggestions religiously;
he claims there's a lot of funny business going on in their
"product review" processes.
Assuming that this is true, it sounds like the best thing to do
is to ask for suggestions from folks who have bought equipment
in this price/performance range. I have a good system (the
electronics is Yamaha's "Natural Sound" series, the speakers
are Mitsubishi MS-20's). I don't really care about whether
the meters are LED/flourescent/mechanical, though some kind
of peak indicator would be nice.
Does anyone there in net-land have any suggestions?
