I'm looking for a new turntable for my audio system. I am a trained classical musician and am therefore concerned with quality of reproduction, but don't consider myself an audiophile. I've only looked around a little bit, and the turntable that seems to best suit my price/performance needs is the JVC L-L1 (linear tracking, belt drive, DC servo motor). Anyone had good or bad experiences with this model? I could consider JVC's QL-L2, which is basically the same, functionally, but has a quartz-locked, direct-drive motor driving the platter for about $50 more, if there's a significant improvement to be heard. Recommendations? Anything else in the same price range that is a better choice? Of course, the cartridge is going to make a big difference, and that's the second part of my question. I have little or no ideas on how to choose a good one, other than sticking to brand names and models that have been recommended in various audio magazines. So I would appreciate any insights on what to look for. In particular, the room this thing is going into reverbrates quite nicely for bass, but highs get lost, so I'd be willing to trade off a little bass response for a good high range. (Yes, I know an equalizer would help, but I can't afford one right now.) The total cost for the turntable and cartridge should be about $250, so there will have to be trade-offs between turntable and cartridge quality, but as I said, I'm not an audiophile anyway. Please mail responses to me and if there's sufficient response and interest I'll summarize to the network. Thanks. Joe Ziegler ...ihnp4!hogpc!pegasus!lzmi!ziegler <or> ...mhtsa!lznv!ziegler
