I have finally experienced CD skipping first hand. My CD skip also occurred on an apparently clean disc. The player just refused to find the next track on the disc and happily played the same one over and over again. Fearing the worst, I pulled the disc from the player and carefully inspected it. I could detect a few dust specks but nothing major. I solved the problem by wiping the disc on my blue jeans and trying again. The disc played perfectly this time. I was surprised to hear a skip because of a piece of dust, but was gratified that it wasn't permanent. I assummed that the speed of the spinning disc would throw most dust off the disc, or at least playing through the dust would knock it off. Now, I suspect that these CD's contain little pockets of static just like my good old LP's did. These localized pockets of static don't cause record pops, but they do hold dust particles firmly to the surface of the CD.
