I currently am using a hand-me-down Garrard (sp?) turntable given to me by a friend who upgraded his system. I'm at a point where I'd like to upgrade my system, i.e.: new turntable and would appreciate any opinions of *direct* versus *belt* drive turntables. I've always thought that direct drives were better if for no other reason than not having to replace the belt now and then. True, false, or maybe? ihnp4!ihuxl!esj

I`ve had belt-driven tables for twenty years (an AR and two Philips) and have never had to replace a belt. Nor could I ever hear any perceptible wow/flutter (even from the AR, which didn`t have a servo speed regulating system) or rumble (75W/ch into two Advents per channel) that wasn`T on the record itself.
