The newest CD players in Japan (from Yamaha, Lo-D [Hitachi], Sony, Pioneer) are all horizontal front-loaders (Sony style) and somewhat smaller than the Sony CDP-101 (the Lo-D is only about 2" high). The Yamaha lists for Y95K ($404) and the new cheap Sony for Y110K. These seem to be mechanically somewhat lighter than the original players (plastic CD trays vs metal, for example) with reduced control options. Sony also has a new top-of-the-line model, more expensive than the CDP-701. The stock of CDs has broadened insofar as record labels are concerned (RCA, EMI, Supraphon) but everybody still seems to be issuing new (or old) recordings of Ein Heldenleben. Interestingly, CBS/Sony has a CD Bruno Walter series; now, how long ago DID Walter die? JF
