Yes, there can be a problem with the dust cover attracting the tone arm, if it picks up a static charge. However, the "cure" of playing records with the cover open is worse than the disease - the principal villian attacking sound quality and record life after a record leaves the pressing plant is dust and dirt. The cure is to use a Zerostat to discharge the dust cover before you play the record as well as using the Zerostat on the record itself to prevent it from attracting dust. By the way, The only record cleaning system I recommend is the Discwasher system which works very well and will not (unlike many "Brand X" preparations on the market) damage records by removing plasticizers from the vinyl. I forget if I mentioned this the last time the dust cover debate was in vogue, but I have found that I must always play records with the dust cover down. Otherwise it will make quite a mess of the record when the cat jumps on the turntable during play.
