[net.audio] When NOT to use the Hafler circuit

wjm@whuxk.UUCP (MITCHELL) (01/04/84)

As mentioned in earlier articles posted to net.audio, the Hafler circuit
can be used to enhance the depth of a stereo system by using a 3rd speaker
to reproduce the out-of-phase information between channels. In general,
the Hafler circuit IF PROPERLY CONNECTED (I know one character who burned out
his power amp by connecting it up wrong) will do no harm to one's amplifier or
speakers IF the amplifier has a common ground between channels and does NOT
invert the phase on one channel. If the amp does NOT have a common ground
connection, serious amplifier damage can result from the use of this circuit.
This circuit should NOT be used with the Carver amp, or any other amp that
inverts the phase of one channel.

Harmon-Kardon amps (with dual power supplies) are also know for not having a
common ground between channels. I once blew out a set of speakers learning
this.
