[net.audio] CD Price Info.

Does anyone know of a place to buy CDs at reasonable prices. The
cheapest I have seen is $17 (in the Chicago area). How about CDs
through mail order?

$17 IS a pretty good price. I've been paying from $18 to $20.

I heard that a CD manufacturing plant is supposed to be opening
in Kentucky sometime this coming June, after which time CD prices are
supposed to fall dramatically. From what I've been able to tell,
all of the CDs now on the shelves are coming from Japan, and some are
even bootlegged - hence the high prices.

Can anyone confirm the rumour about US manufacturing?

I don't know about Kentucky, but the CBS record plant in Terre
Haute, Indiana is being set up to produce CD's. Since the layoff of
most of the record makers the city is greatful that at least some of
the jobs will be returning.

Present CD's are not all coming from Japan. All of Warner/Elektra/Asylum CD's
come from Polygram in West Germany. Philips and DG also come from there, I'm
sure. The CBS CD's are coming from Japan, and yes some are bootlegged into
this country. (I have found a few that aren't officially available over here)
I also have a CD manufactured by Sanyo (I think it's on the Realtime audiophile
label). M&K is supposed to be producing a few (or planning to) somewhere in
Virginia. CBS is building a plant in Indiana.

In general, the West German CD's appear silver at the edges. The Japanese
(CBS/SONY or SANYO) appear clear.

An addendum: The selection of CD's in Chicago is literally huge, now. Laurie's
Record's has between 1000-2000 titles of which probably 400-500 are pop.
(This is my estimate and it may be low, it takes hours to scour the racks of
CD's nowadays) Jazz is still scarce; I wish ECM was producing more CD's than
are presently available. Anybody know?
