I'm currently in the market to upgrade my stereo system. I'm thinking about $800 to $1000 to come up with a receiver or tuner/amp combo, and a good cassette deck. I'm currently leaning towards a Denon DRA-700 and a DR-M2. Anybody out there have comments on these? Alternatives? I'm also looking for speakers in the $300-$500 range (maybe a bit more if the quality warrants). There was some discussion of speakers here a few months ago, but I didn't follow it very closely because I didn't think I would be able to afford new ones in the forseeable future. So, here I am. I've had 2 or 3 people recommend the Mission 700S speakers to me. What other speakers should I listen to? I'm going to select these based, in large part, on how they sound, but I need some good suggestions on what to listen to. Thanks. -- Off the Wall of Gene Spafford School of ICS, Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 CSNet: Spaf @ GATech ARPA: Spaf.GATech @ CSNet-Relay uucp: ...!{akgua,allegra,rlgvax,sb1,unmvax,ulysses,ut-sally}!gatech!spaf

I recently bought a pair of 880's, and I think they are pretty darn good for the money. When I went to the local shop carrying these things, the first ones turned on were the bottom of the line, little bookshelf-sized jobs (480s, I think). They were astounding at a list price of 169$ each. I found the 880s sounded noticably better to me than the 780s, so paid the little bit more. I picked the 880 over: Genesis 210, Polk 10B, Polk SDA-2, B&W-14, Ohm Walsh 2, and some others that I can't remember. These new speaks have been advertised a bit in the rags over the last few months. What I find most impressive with them is their clarity. For example, on jazz stuff (e.g. Weather Report), background percussion instruments would stand out more clearly than on other speakers. I think because of their clarity, imaging is very good.
