[net.audio] Help Wanted: Record anti-static, dust techniques

lincoln@eosp1.UUCP (Dick Lincoln) (01/11/84)

I need advice (direct or a good, succinct reference) on the proper care
of records and stylus to suppress dust and static, answering the
following questions, among others.

Should records be treated before each play or only periodically?

Should records be sprayed, washed (some people have told me they wash
their records in mild detergent just like dishes), or simply wiped with
something?

If sprayed, what commercial sprays are good? Is a mixture of isopropyl
alcohol (real, not "rubbing") and distilled water as good or better: if
so, what proportional mixture? How much spray should be applied
(soaked, misted, or in between)?

Should records be wiped after washing or spraying: if so, with what
(one of the velvet brush products)?

If not wiped dry, should records be allowed to dry carefully before
playing?

What are the best techniques for removing dusty "gundge" from a stylus
(I have a Shure V15-IV with "super elliptical" stylus)?

Is it helpful, as suggested here before, to spray an anti-static
mixture on your turntable dust cover if you replace it while playing
records? (I have a ten-year old Dual 1215 with a very high dust cover:
large distance between it and the tone arm; the V15-IV tracks at 1.5
grams to the tone arm (only 0.5 grams "forwarded" to the record).)

I have just recently returned to record listening after a long hiatus -
in my old days the Dust Bug was thought to be the best thing around. I
have a lot of catching up to do.

				      Thanks in advance
