[net.audio] Dynamic range of WFMT

I am toying with the idea of purchasing a SONY PCM Digital
Audio Processor and videocassette recorder for use as
a cassette deck. In sixteen bit mode this has a dynamic
range of 96 dB. I know that this is greater than one
can achieve with almost any other recording medium.
This raises the question of where I can get material of high
enough quality not to waste its capabilities. CDs are
one possibility. But I am also wondering how good WFMT
broadcasts are here in Chicago, especially the ones from
CDs. Does anyone know what dynamic range I might get from
a station like this? It would obviously depend on the
distance from the transmitter, in my case about 2.5 miles,
and the quality of my receiver, Pioneer SX-650. Is the
PCM overkill for recording from the airwaves?

My understanding ( probably gleaned from one of the trades ) is that WFMT,
along with WGBH Boston, has one of the best FM signals in the country. If
that's true, you will probably get a very high dynamic range. The compression
is then limited by the spectrum content of the signal ( Help, FM heavies!).
After all, the FCC still does not like more than six overmods per minute.
