Subj; building a small home recording studio

I'm a musician who has a pile of stuff that I call a
4-track studio. With the exception of a very nice synthesizer
and an ok deck (Teac 3340 w/simul-sync), most of the equipment
is out-of-date, inappropriate or cheap.

What I would like to have is a modern, well-matched
4 (8 ideally) track studio with which I could make multi-track
synthesizer tapes and mix them down to a good quality (can't
afford great) stereo tape.

I don't need microphones since all my recording will be
in-line.

Can anyone suggest what equipment would be essential for
such a studio? I can afford (at most) $15k so we aren't talking
audiophile quality. What type of tape decks do you recommend?
What brand mixing board? Limiters, compressors, digital delay,
speakers (don't need loud volume, just accurate reproduction),
etc.?

	Relatedly, has anyone used/heard Yamaha's new 4-track
multi-track cassette recorder? For roughly $1k, it comes with
built-in mixing board with pan, built-in echo & graphic eq.

				Thanks, Karl
