[net.audio] 1812 overture a real test?

I just read an interesting tidbit in the Sensible Sound (which, by the way,
has a very refreshing attitude towards expensive audio equipment; it thinks
Linn Sondek and Regaplanar are ridiculously overpriced and NOT the pinnacle
of audio reproduction, for example).

The infamous cannon shot on the Telarc 1812, if you look at the microphotograph
the transient forms a 45 degree angle with the unmodulated groove. Guess
what - the cutter head limits at 45 degrees - i.e., the cutter was slewing,
not linearly tracking the input. Therefore, what you hear during the transient
is the cutter head, not the cannon shot. Of course, the question is, who
cares - but if you're interested in high velocity recordings, the Sheffield
Track Record is probably better. The recording levels on this album were
purposely lowered to avoid slewing.

I think Mayorca and Sax are a couple of bozos too, but not as bad as Linn
Sondek's ad manager...
