I can't resist throwing in my two cents worth. I have had the opportunity over the past nine years to sample the offerings of classical stations in Chicago, Washington DC, and New York. To my taste, WFMT (Chicago) is the BEST of the bunch - by far (note I refer to programming quality, not signal quality - I make no comments there, because of problems related to my own location and equipment). I fondly recall Andy Karzas' program "From the Recording Horn", an excellent program of truly unusual and interesting historical recordings, and Don Tait's WONDERFUL series on Leopold Stokowski (where I first heard the early Bell Labs stereo recordings). While the others - WQXR, WNCN, WNYC (NYC) and WETA, WGMS (DC) - all offer many good things, I don't find the overall level up to WFMT (I do, however, have fond memories of Paul Hume's programs on WGMS...). I remember listening to WGMS when I lived near DC. To this day, I haven't been able to erase the memory of a commercial jingle they played maybe 200 times a day: "Sooner or later you'll own ********" Sometimes the music in between the commercials was great, though. Except at rush hour. That's when most classical radio stations play trash more vile than the sleaziest top-40. Especially WGMS. -michael
