I've never liked linear turntables. I feel that the theoretical elimination of tracking error (which is minimal in a good conventional pivoted arm, like the Linn Ittok) is more than offset by the added mechanical complexity of the linear tracking mechanism, which requires a fairly complex servomechanism to move the cartridge inward as the record is played. The more experience I get with turntables, the more I am convinced that the simpler the better. In support of this argument, I note that most high-end tables (like the Linn) are very elegant, but very simple - consisting of a high quality motor driving a platter via a belt. These machines are single-play manuals with no connection between the arm and the drive mechanism. I am very wary of ANY mechanical connection to the arm, since it will add some drag to it.
