[net.audio] incessant arguing about sound quality

coltoff@burdvax.UUCP (Joel Coltoff) (02/10/84)

It seems as though the arguments that are going on can never be won by
anybody. We are talking about something subjective. That is what each
of perceives to sound right. However, some of the points people use to
back their views are ridiculous.

Mr. Buckley talks about his professional musician friends who know what
SOUNDS right. I for one am not impressed. Let me carry the counter
argument to an extreme. Stevie Wonder is a professional musician who
knows what combination of notes and instruments people like to hear. He
certainly doesn't know what SOUNDS right. I think you can see the point
here. A musician can be good and not know a thing about acoustics.
Don't be impressed by the term "professional". That to me only means
that they are paid to play.

He also has another friend who can build the best trumpet the world has
ever heard. This is the one I could have lots of fun with. Tom, has
your friend ever heard the first trumpet ever made? I suspect not.
What he is doing then is giving the world his interpretation of what a
trumpet should sound like. What gives him the authority to do that? If
I go out and by an original Picasso, cut it down and put it in an 8 x 10
frame I still have that original but I have destroyed the effect the
artist tried to create. Designing and building a musical instrument is
the same thing as designing audio equipment. Both are trying to
faithfully reproduce the original sound of the music.

As for your background I'm glad you had the oppurtunity to attend
lots of live performances. It is a chance a lot of people miss out
on.
