I find your comments about the sound of drums on a CD very interesting -- since I thought that even analog proponents generally conceded that digital improved percusion sounds. Perhaps you could be somewhat more specific about the problem then "I put my fingers in my ears". Did you find it too loud, harsh, distorted or what? Which recording was this? One constructive thing that this endless debate can do is make us think about the sound a little more and help us become aware of sound qualities we might otherwise not have noticed. By being specific and constructive rather than emotional we might actually learn something. I personally think drums sound very good on CDs. But if you tell me what you objected to I will certainly listen for it. I do believe that LPs can sometimes sound 'better' than CDs. It doesn't matter why or which sounds more lifelike, only that it sounds better to the individual. If you listened to CDs with a more objective state of mind maybe you would start to appreciate some of their qualities. By the same logic, if I listened to direct-to-discs on Linn turntables more often, maybe I would appreciate more of the qualities of analog sound. Rick Dow inhp4!hpfcla!rmd
