[] I live in Bloomington, Indiana. I know it's hard to believe, but the local newspaper does not cover the World Championship!!! What papers would you recommend for covering the WC? (Note: I don't ordinarily read newspapers.) What are the best chess magazines for covering world chess events? (I am new to the US.) Daryel Akerlind ...ihnp4!inuxc!iuvax!dsaker

Almost makes me want to be a Communist! :-) > What papers would you recommend for covering the WC? (Note: I don't > ordinarily read newspapers.) The New York Times is supposed to be good, except for the typos ( constant replacement of "e4" with "P-K4", etc ). Try your public library. > What are the best chess magazines for covering world chess events? (I am > new to the US.) Try "Players Chess News". Costs about $30 a year, 26 issues a year. It has results from most important international events, annotated games, etc. They also have a "Theory and Analysis" paper, that comes out on the weeks that PCN does not. It is also $30. Editors are Christiansen (sp?) and Tarjan ( Not sure about this...he might have left ). Address is Players Chess News Circulation Dept: Box 5721 Pasadena, Ca 91107 (213)577-7233 -- Tim Smith ihnp4!wlbr!callan!tim or ihnp4!cithep!tim

Before I get flamed at, here are the correct prices for PCN and for T&A ( Jokes to /dev/null! ). PCN is $33/year, and T&A is $35/year. Taken from the June 25,1984 issue. Here is a summary/review of this issue for those who might be considering a subscription: This issue was 12 pages long. I count about 50 games, of which ~18 were annotated. Events covered were the USSR vs. the Rest of the World match, the Capablanca Memorial, Bugojno, Cuban Championship, Oslo 1984, and the Christiansen - Reshevsky match. Results, but no games, were reported for Belgrade and the U.S. Junior Championship. Also in this issue was "Game of the Month", by GM Svetozar Gligoric. This is the column that used to appear in Chess Life. This is a fairly typical issue, although many issues also have some theoretical stuff. I have not seen T&A, so don't know what it is like. Anybody out there care to post a review? If you like GM and IM games, but don't feel like getting them 24 pages a month, The Players publish a neat series called "Players Chess Annual". This comes out every six months ( they must have a short year! ), and contains about 1100 games, about 200 or so annotated. Also included are all the major tournament results for that 6 month period, plus some theoretical stuff. In short, the last six months worth of PCN. I think that these are more useful than Informant, and they cost less. -- Tim Smith ihnp4!wlbr!callan!tim or ihnp4!cithep!tim
