I have been shopping around for tape decks. I have heard from more than one (reputable) dealer that the quality of the NAK BX 1/2 has been dropping off since they subcontracted the production of the particular deck. This has been noticed in the past one or two years. They still think it's a good sounding deck, just not as reliable as before. I was steered towards some Harman Kardon decks, where it was claimed I would get a better price/performance ratio as well as much better reliability. Specifically, I was reccomended to buy CD 401 (old model) / CD 491 (new model) or the CD 301 / CD 391. The prices are comparable to the NAK decks, and they have Dolby HX Professional bias adjust (or whatever). One store claimed that if I didn't need bells and whistles, and didn't mind sacrificing some of the reliability of the HK decks I should consider a Tandberg 3014 (again, in the same price range.) The Tandberg is a single motor, two head deck with peak reading VU meters (rather than LED's or gas discharge readout). The Tandberg has their own version of Dolby HX which is supposed to be more accurate. They said that in the price range (710 dollars Canadian) it was by far the best sounding deck. Does anyone out there have any information about any of this? Rumors? Gossip? Hard facts? I have been planning to buy a BX 2 for some time, but I am not so sure now.
