Public Television is featuring a program on the World Championship. In the NYC area, it can be viewed on Channel 13, Sundays at 3PM. In last week's program, Boris Spassky was a guest commentator. The moves of game 6 were arriving through telex, during the show, which meant that the show was not live, since that game had already appeared on the net. Curiously enough, the hosts seemed as interested in a lousy micro- computer's analysis as that of the former world champion. I am not complaining, since it is a miracle to me that such a program is shown at all on television here. For the story, Spassky hopes and thinks that Kasparov will win the match, but he was only one game down at the time. Since I missed the beginning of the show, perhaps others in USENET land have interesting things to add about it. P.S. A previous article of mine had the wrong login name in the path provided in the signature file. This has been corrected here. -- Gary Mamon Princeton University Astrophysics (609)-452-3579 {allegra,akgua,burl,cbosgd,decvax,ihnp4,noao,princeton,vax135}!astrovax!gam

xx I noticed some items in Gary's article I think needed additional comment. > Public Television is featuring a program on the World Championship. > The moves of game 6 were arriving through telex, during the show, > which meant that the show was not live, since that game had already > appeared on the net. > Since I missed the beginning > of the show, perhaps others in USENET land have interesting things to add > about it. It was explained in the first few minutes of the show that the game was being re-created. The hosts, however, hadn't seen the results of the live games so the talk would be genuinly spontaneous. > Curiously enough, the hosts seemed as interested in a lousy micro- > computer's analysis as that of the former world champion. The maker of the computer was a MAJOR sponser of the program. A little tip of the hat to them can be overlooked as long as it doesn't interfere with the flow of the program. There was considerably less of this after the first show. > I am not complaining, since it is a miracle to me that such a program > is shown at all on television here. > For the story, Spassky hopes and thinks that Kasparov will win the match, > but he was only one game down at the time. Spassky seems to think alot of Kasparov, he's commented that Kasparov is still in the infancy of his career and has alot of room to grow. Even so, Spassky puts Kasparov and Karpov in one league and everyone else in another league. (According to his comments on the show.)
