i'm planning on getting a nice stero system for a truck i'm buying. i'm not getting the stereo system from the dealer but from a variety of stereo stores. one of the things i'm unsure about is what kind of aerial to get. i was thinking of getting the hirshman 6900 which costs $119. i could also get the hirshman 8600 which costs $39. as far as i can tell the primary difference is that the 6900 has an electronic amplifier but it is $80 more. the tuner section of the stereo i plan on getting is very good. i live in a reasonably sized city (san diego) but the reception here is variable within fairly short distances, also i plan to use the truck primarily on weekends for camping and fishing jaunts (i.e. in the countryside). what i'm confused about is whether or not it is possible to overdrive the tuner with too strong a signal from the antenna. or possibly the aerial amplifier is designed so that it doesn't send out too strong of a signal when it is recieving a good signal. i could get the unamplified aerial and if i discover that an aerial amplifier is necessary i could get the audiovox ab-50 antenna booster at $15 and it has a switch so that it can be disabled (although i don't know how good audiovox stuff is). replies from knowledgeable persons are solicited; please respond via mail as i don't read this newsgroup and we don't get netnews on my home machine.
