<Please, no unkind comments from you super-audiophile types.> I've been using both Shure M95-HE and M95-ED cartridges for a while now, and for a $30-40 cartridge I think it's pretty good. Here's the question: The last cart I bought was the ED version. When going to replace the stylus, they had no EDs in stock. So, I purchased the HE version and installed it on my M95-ED cart. I figured this was reasonable since (I believe) the only difference between them is the actual stylus shape (elliptical vs. hyper-elliptical). I became concerned when I got home and the literature enclosed with the stylus indicated that only two styli are intended for replacement on a M95-HE (the one I bought, and a mono version). Does anyone know if the carts themselves are different? BTW, it sounds fine, and there's no noticeable difference in performance. While we're at it... anybody have any alternate suggestions for a mid-priced cartridge?

When Shure first started the changeover from the M95-ED to the M95-HE, they had a couple of ads that advised M95-ED owners to just go out and by the HE replacement stylus, as that was the only difference, and the owners could "upgrade" (slightly) without having to buy the whole cartridge. Unfortunately, stylus prices are typically a big portion of the whole cartridge price, to encourage cartridge up-grading, so the actual savings were pretty small. In short, Shure was advising people to do what you did. Bob Schleicher ihuxk!rs55611 AT&T Bell Laboratories
