I have been using a bulk tape eraser for a few years now to pre-erase
previously used open-reel tapes, videocassettes and audio cassettes,
with good results, especially on videocassettes, which are difficult
to edit. However, I've just discovered another use for it. I have
a lot of small hand tools (screwdrivers, dikes, needlenose, etc.)
that tend to become magnetized after use. Zapping them for about 10
seconds with the bulk eraser removes pesky magnetism from even a heavy
pair of dikes (no lesbian jokes please). When I tried this with my tape
head demagnetizer, results were not very good. The bulk eraser, however,
develops a surprisingly strong alternating magnetic field which damn near
yanked a pair of pliers out of my hand when I first tried it. Who'd
have thought the audio industry would produce spinoffs?
If you use a bulk eraser, don't do it anywhere near your tape collection.
That magnetic field is STRONG!!
