(oo) Owing to the number of sweeping generalizations ("All CD players sound mediocre"), incisive accusations ("A 50-Khz sampling rate is not good enough") and other learned pronouncements I've seen on this net of late, I've concluded that there must be some very wise folks out there who kindly condescend to sharing a bit of their special insight with the rest of us. Who ARE these people? The test I've included below is devised to help find out if YOU, yes, YOU might qualify for the title of "Supreme Pundit of net.audio." Those who score high enough will have their names posted to the net, wherupon the rest of us will vote for our individual favorites. The winner will be called upon to arbitrate all disputes arising between so-called audio gurus, or "Golden Ears," and to settle all questions regarding equipment, recording technology, etc. Decisions of the Supreme Pundit will be final, to be followed without question. Here goes -- 1) How much money have you spent on audio equipment in the last 5 years? a) >$1000 b) >$1000 per year c) >$1000 per month 2) How long do you typically keep an audio component before upgrading it? a) Less than two years b) Less than one year c) Less than 6 months. 3) A gold assay of your ears would reveal: a) Sterling silver b) 14K c) 24K 4) A good turntable can be had for: a) under $750 b) under $1500 c) Turntable? you can't even get a good tone arm for that! 5) Digital Audio is: a) A major breakthrough b) A step in the right direction c) A waste of time 6) The most important SINGLE specification in determining the quality of an audio component is: a) Wide frequency response b) Low Total Harmonic Distortion c) A price tag with at least 4 digits 7) A good cassette deck is: a) a Harman-Kardon CD 491 b) a Revox B710 c) a ridiculous notion 8) Loudspeakers should be connected with: a) 16 gauge or heavier wire b) Monster Cable c) Silver wire maintained at cryogenic temperatures. 9) Good loudspeakers should cost a) More than a washing machine b) More than a car c) More than a house 10) You bought your equipment because it was recommended in: a) Consumer Reports b) Stereo Review c) Absolute Sound Scoring: score 0 for each question you couldn't answer 1 for each "a" answer, 2 for each "b" answer 3 for each "c" answer Ratings: 0-7 Tin ears 8-14 Consumer 15-21 Audiophile 22-30 Expert - candidate for Supreme Pundit of net.audio. Please send a summary of your responses me if you have a qualifying score. I'll post the results to the net. In the meantime, you should be composing an essay, in 25,000 words or less, stating why you want the title and what special qualifications you have which would enable you to perform this function. Title the essay "Look, You Dorks, I Know More About It Than Anybody," and post it to the net. This will be used by net.audio readers in determining who should get their vote. Oh, I know somebody will ask; I scored a miserable 12, which in no way qualifies me for the position. -- Bob Fishell ihnp4!ihu1g!fish

Do I detect one of these :-) at the end of the basenote? Many times sarcasm goes undetected in this group. Dave Barrett hplabs!hp-dcd!barrett
