[net.audio] Fletcher Munson tracking

yraurb@hou2g.UUCP (G.DECKER) (04/09/84)

I think that Suk Lee is correct in stating that the Fletcher Munson curves
shouldn't track instantaneous levels. I would like to present an example,
however, that lead me to make the suggestion.

Consider a live concert with a average SPL of 90 dB. Assume the dynamic
range to be 40 dB. A given ear's frequency response will exhibit certain
changes between 70 dB and 110 dB.

Now consider playback. We are listening to the same performance but average
SPL is 80 dB. Perhaps our given ear's frequency response exhibits a different
change between 60 and 100 dB than it did between 70 and 110 dB. I was trying
to suggest a compensation for this .

Interestingly enough, what Mr. Decker described does have
to be compensated for, but for reasons having to do with
the performers. Have you ever heard recordings of live concerts
(rock) where the singers sounded terribly flat? Questions of
singing ability aside, part of the reason is that at the
extremely high levels one encounters at rock concerts, the pitches
perceived by the singer are far enough off that they sing flat.

On the other hand, I don't think it's worth the effort
in this case.....
