If you are talking about NOISE, the best place to improve the amplifier system is in the first stage, where the signal level is the lowest and thus closest to the noise level of any stage in the chain (as any communications text will tell you, if it's quoted correctly). The S/N of this first stage signal will only decrease as it passes through the rest of the chain. As far as distortion goes, whatever component is the poorest should go bye-bye first.
