[net.audio] Why doesn't jj go away?

jhs@rabbit.UUCP (04/16/84)

Another example of wit, decency, and intelligence in net.audio!
Buckley wants to know why anyone pays any attention to jj, points
out that jj has not posted credentials to Buckley's satisfaction by
speculating that jj is a janitor, and suggests to netland as
a whole that jj may go away if ignored.

More or less in reverse order,

	1) to those of us who know jj, the idea that he will go
	away if ignored is ludicrous.

	2) some people are personally reticent about their accomplishments &
credentials (or at least not exhibitionistic).

if jj choses not to discuss his background, that's up to
him. I trust that I am not divulging anything which could
not be gleaned from the public record (by anyone who cared
to look before casting possibly libelious aspersions) by
disclosing that jj is a researcher at Murray Hill,
ATT Bell Labs. Among his publications (not a complete list,
just what I have at home) are:

jj & R. E. Crochiere - An All Digital Commentary Grade
	Sub-Band Coder, J. of the AES v27, pp 855-865 (1978(?))

jj - A Filter Family Designed for Use in QMF Filter Banks,
ICASSP '80 pp 291-294 (some of the results of this paper
appear as appendix 7.1 in "Multirate Digital Signal Processing",
	by Crochiere & Rabiner, Prentice-Hall, (1983))

	R.E.Crochiere, R.V.Cox, & jj - Real-Time Speech Coding, IEEE
	Trans. Com. pp 621-634 (1982)

	R. V. Cox, jj, et al. - A Study of Algorithms and Methods of
Evaluation for Wideband Coding, ICASSP '84

	J. R. Boddie, jj, et al. - Adaptive Differential PCM Coding,
	BSTJ - v60 no 7, part 2 pp 1547-1561 (1981)

jj & D. J. Goodman - Multipurpose Hardware for Digital Coding
of Audio Signals - IEEE Trans. Com. COM-26 pp 1785-1788 (1978)

Obviously his collaborators don't mind being associated with
him. (If you don't recognize them, Buckley, I suggest looking
in Who's Who in American Science, and [if it exists]
	WW in American Engineering.)

	3) As to why people pay attention to jj, I offer 2 possibilities:
		a) he gets under their skin (Buckley's, for example);
		b) he's usually right (which is even worse).

Could someone please explain why we should pay attention to Buckley?

I suggest in the future leaving personal attacks to private
	mail or net.flame.
