Subj; portable cassette recorder What I'd like is - a VERY GOOD portable (battery/AC option), stereo, cassette recorder. With dolby b (ideally c also). Aux in, and aux out, headphone jacks, tape counter, some kind of meters, & tone control(s). Should accept external mikes. I live in New Hampshire and can't find anything like it. Does it exist? If it's good enough, I'm willing to pay up to $800 (excluding microphones). I'll be using it for a wide variety of purposes (sound effects, conversation, AND MUSIC). What do ethnomusicologists, naturalists, etc., use in the field? All suggestions appreciated. ,Karl ...decvax!decwrl!rhea!star!malik

SONY makes two decent portable casette recorders: the walkman pro (about $300) and another small model which has been out for about four years, in the same ballpark pricewise. I doubt that these are good enough for most ethnomusicological field work though. If you want that type of quality, I think Nakamichi makes an excellent model. The best field work is still done with Nagra portable reel-to-reel as far as I know. I don't own any of the stuff mentioned, but know people with the SONY's who are very happy with them. -Noel -- -- Noel Kropf {philabs,cmcl2!rocky2}!cubsvax!noel.UUCP 212-280-5517 -- 1002 Fairchild; Columbia University; New York NY 10027
